Thread Formers for Metric ISO Threads (M)
Our M-thread formers made from HSSE (High-Speed Steel with Cobalt Alloy) are distinguished by their high heat hardness and excellent temper resistance. The M version is designed for producing internal threads according to the metric ISO standard. In Europe, thread formers marked with the letter M are particularly common. The term "standard thread" is also frequently used to refer to this type of internal thread. Metric ISO threads define the pitch and diameter in millimeters, with specific standards set in DIN 13 and 14. A characteristic of this thread type is the flank angle of exactly 60 degrees. It is important not to confuse the M-thread former with its smaller counterpart, the metric ISO fine thread (MF), which uses a different pitch.
Advantages of Thread Formers over Other Methods
When creating internal threads, the presence of chips—often generated by thread taps—can be undesirable due to specific process safety requirements. Removing chips is time-consuming, and any remaining chips can compromise precision or even functional safety. In certain applications, chip generation is simply unacceptable. To create internal threads completely without chips, M-thread formers, also known as thread rollers, are ideal. With this threading tool, the internal threads are not cut or drilled; they are formed through cold forming. This means that the material being processed must have adequate cold formability. If this condition is met, there is no reason not to use thread rollers for your project.
High Precision with Thread Formers
Whether you are using M-thread rollers for metric ISO threads or creating threads of other standards, unlike traditional thread cutting, no material is removed in this process. Instead, the pressure flutes of the thread former push the base material of the workpiece to the side. Along with high precision, this method is also characterized by high processing speed. While the tool life is significantly shorter with thread drilling and cutting, thread rollers can often be used over longer periods. However, precise core holes are essential for the effective use of this tool. When material properties and core drilling meet the necessary requirements, the resulting threads are especially smooth and exhibit very high strength.
The following thread formers or thread rollers are available in our standard range:
- M
- MF
- HSSE
