HSSE 2-flutes end mills, -cutters & radius end mills
HSSE and HSS slot drills, drill slot cutters, radius cutters (2-Flute) by Nachreiner
Nachreiner’s HSSE and HSS slot drills are ideal for creating elongated slots (also known as long holes) in metal, plastic, and wood. These slot drills, like the drill slot cutters, are classified as shank cutters, meaning they can be used both as end mills and peripheral cutters. By traditional definition, they feature at least one cutting edge at the end that leads to the center of the HSS slot drill. Nachreiner has opted for a two-flute design, hence the term "2-Flute." This central cutting configuration is essential, regardless of the number of flutes, to allow the slot drill to plunge into the workpiece. Though it may resemble a drill, this tool remains distinctly a milling cutter. With standard shank cutters, deep plunging isn’t possible because they lack a central cutting edge, a necessity for HSS slot drills. The reduced number of flutes further distinguishes HSS slot drills from other shank cutters, particularly for machine-produced slots that are not through-cuts, which would be challenging without dedicated HSS slot drills.
Nachreiner Two-Flute tools: Slot drills, radius cutters, and drill slot cutters in HSSE
Here is an overview of the different two-flute tools in Nachreiner’s program:
The slot drills are manufactured to DIN 327 specifications, while DIN 844 applies to drill slot cutters. It’s worth noting that DIN standards are not an indicator of quality, so we recommend purchasing only high-quality Nachreiner tools. The superior craftsmanship and material quality result in long tool life and low manufacturing tolerances—qualities often lacking in cheaper tools, despite adherence to DIN standards.
Slot drills and radius cutters
Radius cutters, which are used to round off surfaces, are ideal for softening edges on workpieces where sharp corners may pose a risk or are structurally undesirable. Radius cutters are also useful for optimizing holes and slots by rounding off edges to a specified radius.
What are “Fish Tail” Two-Flute Cutters?
Sometimes, two-flute cutters feature a "fish tail" grind, named for its visual resemblance to a fish tail. This feature is readily apparent and technically advantageous, as it makes it much easier to plunge into materials of varying hardness. The harder the material, the greater the benefit of a fish tail grind. Based on your specific needs, we can customize your tools according to individual specifications and deliver them promptly, even in small quantities. Additionally, we offer common enhancement options for slot drills and other two-flute cutters. Regrinding is also possible, depending on the tool type.
