The HSS roughing end mills and rough-finishing end mills from Nachreiner, which belong to the family of end mills, are some of the most efficient tools for chip removal in metalworking. Unlike other cutting processes like drilling, roughing end mills, with their numerous short cutting edges, do not maintain constant contact with the work material. This results in much shorter chips compared to those produced by a twist drill. Why is this important? Heat generation limits machining time and directly impacts both the workpiece and the tool. Physically, over four-fifths of the heat generated during machining is dissipated through the chips. The shorter the chips, the faster and easier they can be cleared, and the less heat affects the roughing end mill, rough-finishing end mill, and workpiece. However, there’s a trade-off: interrupted cutting edges often lead to unavoidable vibrations. This can result in chatter marks on the workpiece surface, which may require further surface finishing (e.g., with a reamer) to remove.
