Tap extractors for dry machining

If a tap breaks in the middle of a job, it can disrupt your entire day. Fortunately, having a solid carbide (VHM) tap extractor from our range to hand can save the situation. Our extractors are universal problem solvers for broken taps. They are designed for dry machining, so there is no need for complicated lubrication or cooling.

Drilling jammed taps out of tapped holes

Once broken, taps can often only be removed from the threaded hole with an extractor. To avoid damaging the hole, we recommend using our high quality solid carbide (VHM) tap extractors. Our catalogue offers durable carbide extractors that are compatible with a wide range of materials. We stock tap extractors for thread sizes from M3 to M12, providing a solution to almost any tap breakage problem. These VHM tap extractors are suitable for hardened steel up to HRC 60-65. Usable lengths vary according to specific requirements.

Excellent tap extractor durability

Drilling out broken taps can wear out your tools considerably. With one of our tap extractors, you can typically remove between one and six taps, depending on the material, before replacement is required. Actual life will depend on the material of the original tap. A key feature of our extractors is that the base material of the hole remains undamaged during extraction. This can be achieved with proper handling of our tools, even with delicate metals such as aluminium or copper.

How to use your solid carbide tap extractor correctly

Ensure that the broken tap does not protrude from the workpiece at the start. If it does, it should be shortened accordingly.

1. Centre the extractor over the broken tap.

2. Start extracting.

3. For very deep threads, remove chips periodically during extraction.

4. After extraction, remove all chips from the hole, ideally with compressed air.

5. Once cleaned, you can re-cut the thread with a new tap.If you have any specific requirements or questions, please contact us directly. We will be happy to advise you on our range of VHM tap extractors. We also offer a range of new taps to suit your requirements.
