Insert drills
Nachreiner solid carbide indexable inserts, straight fluted, milled
Spiral drills are ideal for many applications in metalworking, particularly for creating short and deep holes. They are available in HSS or HSSE variants, as well as in solid carbide (VHM). However, very large diameters pose a problem when it comes to deeper holes, as the productivity and stability of spiral drills no longer optimally support the production process. For sizes beyond the available and recommended dimensions of universal drills (typically anything over 16 mm in diameter), we recommend using solid carbide indexable insert drills. These drills are similar in design to universal spiral drills and feature grooves that facilitate chip removal. Any required coolant is delivered via internal cooling, using coolant channels in the tool shank, which also resembles the design of spiral drills. The key difference between indexable insert drills and spiral drills lies in the tip. The indexable insert drill is equipped with two or more interchangeable insert cutters, meaning you don’t always need a complete new drill body but just replacement inserts when they become worn or can no longer be resharpened. These inserts are made from high-quality tool steel and, in this case, even from solid carbide. Solid carbide is particularly heat-resistant, can be coated with special coatings if needed, and offers a very high service life compared to other materials. Solid carbide indexable insert drills are suitable for machining high-strength materials such as stainless steel and other materials of similar hardness.
Design of colid carbide indexable insert drills from Nachreiner
The solid carbide indexable insert drills available in the Nachreiner range are equipped with a straight groove and a corresponding chamfer. The inserts are secured in place via the groove. Typically, these inserts are asymmetrically arranged on the drill and are fastened to the drill body with screws. Our indexable insert drills are available in length-to-diameter ratios from 3xD to 20xD. If you require larger sizes, please contact our technical advisors who can help develop possible alternatives with you. Special custom-made tools are also available if no suitable tools for your specific requirements are directly available in our range. Due to the special design, the machining speed during feed rate performance with solid carbide from Nachreiner indexable insert drills is almost as high as that of comparable spiral drills. The machining speed is an important factor for many decision-makers in industry and crafts, as shorter machining times contribute to the efficiency of the entire production process.
Resharpening indexable inserts
It is not always possible to resharpen worn inserts, but Nachreiner can refurbish most cutting tools and drills through professional regrinding, bringing them close to their original condition. Depending on the level of wear, this regrinding can be repeated multiple times. Please contact our service team directly to find out whether your tools can be resharpened.
