HSSE and HSS profile cutters as shaft cutters and quarter round profile cutters

Shank cutters are among the most commonly used cutters in metalworking. The shank-profile cutters and quarter-round profile cutters you will find in this category are designed for creating special profiles using a shank cutter. Most shank cutters are equipped with a right-hand helix for chip removal upward (away from the workpiece). However, special variants can also be manufactured with a left-hand helix upon request. The number of cutting edges is generally not limited, with more cutting edges used depending on the hardness of the material being machined. HSS profile cutters are a special form of shank cutters, as the profile milling process transfers the contours of the cutting tool precisely onto the workpiece. This is often referred to as a generating milling process, suitable for shaping complex geometries such as prisms, gears, or specific groove shapes (e.g., T-slots). There are also half-round and quarter-round HSS profile cutters for milling corresponding profiles into the workpiece. The material composition should be suitable for the performance parameters of HSS or HSSE. These include materials such as aluminum, brass, iron, and steel. Significantly harder metals, such as stainless steel, particularly tough alloys, or other materials like ultra-hard plastics, require either additional special coatings or the use of solid carbide (VHM) tools instead of HSS or HSSE profile cutters.

What else can HSSE and HSS profile cutters be used for?

Depending on the application, the right HSS profile cutters can be used to generate gears and other complex workpiece shapes. The main difference between roll milling and profile milling lies in the cutting process, as, when using an HSS profile cutter, the workpiece typically remains stationary. Our quarter-round HSSE or HSS profile cutters are well-suited for creating specific profiles in appropriate materials. The following specifications are typical for Nachreiner profile cutters made of high-speed steel (HSS) or HSSE (with five percent cobalt content in the cutter's own alloy):

  • HSS-E
  • Specifications according to DIN 6518 or DIN 1835 B
  • Multi-flute design

If you need additional shank and profile cutters that meet different specifications or need to be manufactured according to factory standards, please contact us. The Nachreiner team is capable of custom manufacturing almost any required shank cutter and delivering it according to your specifications. Often, we can also suggest alternatives from our wide range that may be equally suitable for your purposes. Please also take advantage of our reconditioning service for regrinding high-quality cutting tools. Where the profile of a tool allows, we can usually restore worn and dull cutting edges to a condition suitable for further work. This will sustainably and environmentally extend the life of your valuable cutters, drills, and other cutting tools. Furthermore, this saves you costs—this offer also applies to regrinding tools from other manufacturers, as we aim to provide our customers with a comprehensive, personalized service.
