Clean deburring with HSS 60° tapered countersinks by Nachreiner

The HSS tapered countersinks with a 60° angle from Nachreiner Tools are primarily designed for deburring core holes. Unlike flat countersinks (also known as spade countersinks or face countersinks), tapered countersinks create a conical recess, which is used for certain screws, nuts, or rivets that should sit flush with the surface of the workpiece. A flat countersink, on the other hand, is designed for a cylindrical recess (without a conical profile) and features a special pilot pin fixed to the countersink. HSS tapered countersinks do not have such a pin. The conical countersinks are among the most commonly used cutting tools to achieve clean and precise finishes for pre-drilled holes. They are often used in conjunction with reamers to perfectly prepare a core hole for its intended purpose and to achieve a precisely deburred edge structure.

Advanced cutting geometry of our HSS 60° tapered countersinks

There are different approaches to the cutting geometry for HSS 60° tapered countersinks, depending on the manufacturer. It is common to use an odd number of cutting edges (e.g., 3, 5, or 7), but based on our long-standing experience, we rely on the proven number of three cutting edges. This ensures a very smooth operation, allowing for chatter-free performance with both machines and hand drills (e.g., for manual work).

Other HSS and HSSE tapered countersinks for various applications

The HSS 60° tapered countersinks are just one of many conical tools in the countersink category within the Nachreiner range. Other common countersink angles include:

  • 60° for deburring
  • 90° (for countersunk screws according to metric standards, such as DIN or factory specifications)
  • 120° for sheet metal rivets

Additionally, there are other angle sizes for tapered countersinks, though these are less frequently required in everyday metalworking. These include 75° for rivets and 82° for screws according to US standards. We also offer these tapered countersinks as VHM (solid carbide) versions, ideal for machining particularly hard metals such as stainless steel or other tough materials. Our HSS 60° tapered countersinks are also available in VHM versions. Furthermore, you can have the cutting edges coated with special coatings to improve their resistance and performance under specific environmental and operating conditions. Feel free to contact us about this, as well as for our custom-made tools tailored to factory standards and your specific requirements. Nachreiner can manufacture almost any machining tool to your exact measurements, sizes, and lengths, with various material requirements and quality classes.
